The Geoff Etherington collection

The late Geoff Etherington from Nelson left his entire collection of 290 species of Aloes to the Auckland Botanic Gardens recently. It is quite possibly the most extensive collection of aloes in cultivation, so the Gardens are very excited about it. A special function was held on Wednesday 14 October to unveil a commemorative plaque in recognition of the collection. Geoff’s family attended and after the unveiling they walked around the gardens to view where the aloes had been planted in the African Garden, Rock Garden and in the courtyard. It was a big task for the Botanic staff to transport the collection from Nelson to Auckland so Friends of the Auckland Botanic Gardens assisted by paying for airfares and accommodation for staff.
